Renewable Energy News | Maldives Island Chain Looks to Renewable Energy: "July 28, 2004 [SolarAccess.com] A workshop on designing systems to create renewable energy has concluded in Male, the capital city of the Republic of Maldives. The workshop was conducted as part of the efforts by the Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology in exploring the possibilities of generating renewable energy in the Maldives. Consisting of 1,190 coral islands grouped into 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives are well poised to take advantage of renewable energy systems which prove themselves particularly well-suited to powering remote locations. The workshop was funded by the USAID. Concerned officials from the government authorities and technical personnel participated in the workshop which was held from July 19-22. The first two days were dedicated to the officials and the technical personnel, while the last two days were dedicated to training the technical personnel on designing such systems. The training was conducted by experts from the US National Renewable Energy Laboratories, Iyan Barringold and Aliya Gandhoor. In addition to the participants from the Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Atolls Development, Ministry of Home Affairs and Environment, Ministry of Planning and National Development, State Electric Company Limited, Dhivehiraajeyge Gulhun Pvt. Ltd and the UNDP also participated in the workshop. "
